How Center Procedures Can Help

The following services are available privately from the directors and associates of the Center. We would also be happy to refer you to the appropriate practitioner for your needs, whether or not that person is associated with the Center.

THE COLLABORATIVE TREATMENT METHOD
We have evolved a unique model for psychiatric, psychological, neuropsychological, and neurological evaluation and treatment. Included as part of the evaluation is a battery of selected neuropsychological and psychological personality tests, consultation from specialists, and meetings with others who are central to the patient's life, such as family members and teachers. A comprehensive assessment is intended to be carried out collaboratively -- patient and evaluators working hand in hand to arrive at a sophisticated and practical understanding leading to solutions to the patient's problems. Progress is continually monitored and strategy modified over the course of the treatment as targeted problem areas change. While the evaluation contributes to understanding a patient's problems, it also serves as the start of a goal-directed treatment.

COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT
These evaluations are usually conducted as a segment of the Collaborative Treatment Method, described above. As part of the Center designed assessment process, we use self-report, self-assessment, and more in-depth psychologist administered testing. Other consultants pertinent to the assessment are involved as needed. As designed, a comprehensive assessment concludes with a series of meetings incorporating a trial of the treatment strategies identified as promising in the assessment.

FOCUSED, TIME-LIMITED AND OPEN-ENDED THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS
These therapeutic interventions are a continuation of the final portion of the comprehensive assessment described above. According to this model, when psychotherapy is recommended it is monitored to assure efficacy and progress. This treatment is always focused on the problems for which the patient came to treatment, and whenever possible is time-limited.

REMEDIATION OF COGNITIVE AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDERS
Remedial protocols are followed by independent psychologists who have expertise in areas such as cognitive rehabilitation and learning disabilities.

MONITORING and FOLLOWUP: ASSESSING THE RESULTS OF TREATMENT
We advocate regular monitoring of a patient's progress during treatment. Monitoring may involve self-report and self-assessment protocols and/or more complex testing conducted by a psychologist. Then, when treatment is completed, we recommend regular follow-up contacts to assess whether a treatment has had lasting impact.

CONSULTATION TO THERAPISTS, EDUCATORS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS EXPERIENCING IMPASSES
Therapists and other professionals often experience impasses impeding their therapeutic or remedial work. We can provide consultation for these situations either from Center directors and associates or by referral to practitioners outside the Center.

TRAINING
Center members provide trainings in our Collaborative Treatment Method through ongoing consultation groups and seminars. Steven A. Frankel, M.D. is authorized to provide continuing education units to participating psychologists (APA Provider #1754), or LCSWs and MFTs (California Provider #3239).
